We stepped out the window and inhaled the fresh air, filling up our lungs completely. We could even feel our souls breathe.
We had to find something for you out there, a travel permit you said. It was there and you needed it, so we had to get it. _Had_ to.
As i looked around I noticed for the first time that the building we were in was different. Or maybe it seemed different since I wasn't looking at it the same anymore. Between the windows there were no firm bricks cemented together to build a sturdy structure. Instead there were sets of drawers, blowing in the wind.
You didn't seem to notice as you climbed ahead of me. I watched you, the draws were opening themselves for you, making a stairway. Where was it leading? I had to know. Was the pass hidden in one of these bureaus?
The stairs stayed steady for you, but as soon as I put my foot on one the chest of drawers would begin to shake violently. Here and there one would fall our, and I would watch it fall so many stories, until it disappeared from my site. I hadn't noticed how high up we were.
Finally you reached the top, I was not far behind. I watched your face. A manic expression formed. Had you found your pass? Where were you headed that you were in need of it anyway?
I stopped climbing and just looked up at where you were standing. You looked down at me, and I noticed that you had something clutched in your right hand. A piece of paper? Just then you fixated your eyes on the sky, and ran towards the edge of the building.
I didn't scream. I couldn't. I turned so I was no longer facing the stacked up chest of drawers, or building, whatever it was at that point. I threw out my arms, I thought I could catch you. I knew I would. I was sure of it.
Your falling body brushed against my fingertips, but I couldn't pull you in. I had failed. How could I fail? The task didn't seem so hard.
As you continued to fall, I saw a smile on your face. I hadn't failed. I understood why you'd needed your pass.
